CITIES

Whilst researching for the Statues for Equality project Gillie and Marc were struck with the statistics of how few women statues there are globally.  Although the project will be launching in New York city, it is vital that women are publicly represented worldwide.

Here are some statistics that prove this!

  • In the UK there are 25 statues of non-royal women. Interestingly there are 43 statues named John!
  • Australia are close behind with around 3% of statues commemorating historic women
  • San Francisco have 3 historical women statues, compared with 85 depicting named men. We are so pleased to hear that the city has recently passed a quota which states that 30% of new installed statues must depict real women.
  • Across the whole of the USA less than 400 statues are of women
  • 20 women statues are in Scotland, 5 of which show Queen Victoria
Gillie and Marc are excited to begin to change these statistics and are in talks with many different cities to erect statues of named, fantastic women! You can help by nominating an inspirational woman who could become the next subject of Statues For Equality.
