Description
A powerful new bronze sculpture honouring Dawn Staley, legendary coach and trailblazer in women’s basketball, has been unveiled in Columbia, South Carolina, where it will be permanently installed between the Colonial Life Arena and the State House.
As the head coach of the South Carolina Gamecocks, Dawn Staley has transformed the landscape of college basketball, guiding her team to multiple national championships and inspiring a generation through her leadership, resilience, and passion for the game. Her influence reaches far beyond the court — as a mentor, role model, and advocate for equity in sports, she has become one of the most respected figures in athletics today.
The sculpture, created by internationally renowned artists Gillie and Marc, captures Staley’s iconic presence, strength, and unwavering determination. “We wanted to celebrate Dawn’s incredible achievements and the way she has broken barriers, uplifted young athletes, and redefined what’s possible for women in sport,” the artists shared. “This tribute is not just to a coach, but to a true pioneer and icon.”
Commissioned by the University of South Carolina, the sculpture stands as a lasting tribute to Staley’s profound impact on the community, the state, and the sport itself. With a poised and commanding presence, it invites students, fans, and visitors to stand with a woman who continues to inspire greatness and forge new paths — a legacy that will endure for generations.
